A fast solver for the gyrokinetic field equation with adiabatic electrons

چکیده
Describing turbulence and microinstabilities in fusion devices is often modelled with the gyrokinetic equation. During the time evolution of the distribution function a field equation for the electrostatic potential needs to be solved. In the case of adiabatic electrons it contains a fluxsurface-average term resulting in an integro-differential equation. Its numerical solution is time and memory intensive for three-dimensional configurations. Here a new algorithm is presented which only requires the numerical inversion of a simpler differential operator and a subsequent addition of a correction term. This new procedure is as fast as solving the equation without the surface average.

A finite element Poisson solver for gyrokinetic particle simulations in a global field aligned mesh
A new finite element Poisson solver is developed and applied to a global gyrokinetic toroidal code (GTC) which employs the field aligned mesh and thus a logically non-rectangular grid in a general geometry. Employing test cases where the analytical solutions are known, the finite element solver has been verified. The CPU time scaling versus the matrix size employing portable, extensible toolkit...
متن کاملDevelopment and application of Eulerian and Particle-in-Cell gyrokinetic codes for studying the effect of non-adiabatic passing electron dynamics on microturbulence
In tokamak fusion plasmas, micro-turbulence transport is known to be the cause of large losses of heat and particles. The present work deals with the study of electrostatic microturbulence transport driven by instabilities of essentially two types: the ion temperature gradient (ITG) modes and the trapped electron modes (TEM). The plasma is described within the gyrokinetic framework, which permi...
متن کاملA partly matrix-free solver for the gyrokinetic field equation in three-dimensional geometry
In the case of adiabatic electrons the gyrokinetic field equation for the electrostatic potential includes an averaging operator acting on flux surfaces. For realistic three-dimensional configurations, as e.g. in stellarator devices, the discretisation of this integro-differential equation leads to very large nearly dense matrices (full matrix approach) which typically cannot be stored in compu...
متن کاملGlobal particle-in-cell simulations of microturbulence with kinetic electrons
The effects of nonadiabatic electrons on ion temperature gradient drift instabilities have been studied in global toroidal geometry using the gyrokinetic particle simulation approach. Compared to the nonlinear global simulations based on only the adiabatic response of the electrons, we have found that the cross-field ion heat transport is two to three times larger in the presence of trapped ele...
متن کاملKinetic and Fluid Ballooning Stability with Anisotropic Energetic Electron Layers
A kinetic ballooning mode theory is developed from the gyrokinetic equation in the frequency range for which the ions are fluid, the thermal electron response is adiabatic and the hot electrons are non-interacting due to their large drift velocity. Trapped particle effects are ignored. The application of the quasineutrality condition together with the parallel and binormal components of Ampere’...
